According to the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, between 10 and 20 percent of the nation's workers who die on the job test positive for alcohol or other drugs. In fact, industries with the highest rates of drug use are the same as those at high risk for occupational injuries, such as construction, mining, manufacturing, and wholesale.
Although not required by Cal/OSHA, drug-free workplace programs are natural complements to other initiatives that help ensure safe and healthy workplaces and add value to businesses. Substance abuse testing programs, as well as company-provided employee assistance programs, help reduce the risk of substance-related injuries at work—as well as the accompanying risk of lawsuits.
Join us on November 28 for a 90-minute audio conference with our expert—an occupational physician and human resources professional—to discuss how to successfully implement a substance abuse policy and testing program at your workplace.
YOU AND YOUR COLLEAGUES WILL LEARN:
- Who you can lawfully test, and when, and for what
- Why you shouldn't write off the idea of substance abuse testing, even if you think your workplace doesn't have a problem
- How to protect yourself against allegations of wrongful testing or bias
- Options for structuring a successful substance abuse testing program
- Methods available for testing and which one(s) to implement with employees
- Whether or not "rapid tests" are a good idea
- How and why to use or not use components of a DOT program in a non-DOT setting
- Special precautions for California employers
