Diacetyl, whether it occurs naturally as a part of food processing or is added as a flavoring, has been under scrutiny for the past few years because of its association with bronchiolitis obliterans, a rare but debilitating lung disease. California has already passed S.B. 456, the Diacetyl Toxic Substance Ban, and diacetyl is clearly a "hot button" compliance issue

More and more workers are suing their employers over diacetyl-related claims, with verdicts and settlements exceeding a staggering $120 million to date. As an employer, you are responsible for making sure you limit worker exposures to flavoring chemicals through the use of proper engineering controls and PPE.

Join us for a comprehensive webinar—specifically for California employers—designed to bring you up to speed on the evolving diacetyl rules and help you understand how to make your workplace safer for your employees. Bring your managers and supervisors along to share in the experience as we explain what you need to know about diacetyl and similar flavoring chemicals.

You'll learn:

  • The latest on Cal/OSHA's diacetyl standard, and what you need to consider to be in compliance
  • Why diacetyl is considered dangerous, and the data that are being used to support the claims of elevated health risks
  • How to conduct an exposure assessment and interpret the data
  • How to prevent or limit worker exposures to diacetyl
  • Which exposure controls work best to protect workers from diacetyl and other flavoring chemicals
  • The impact food flavoring regulations will have on the food manufacturing industry going forward

About Your Speakers:

David Galbraith, M.D. is a Principal Scientist at the San Francisco branch of ChemRisk, LLC. He is a licensed practicing physician with fourteen years of life sciences consulting experience.

Galbraith specializes in understanding and quantifying the potential health risks associated with the use of drugs and medical devices, and with human exposures to chemical toxins in environmental and occupational settings. He is the author of a published review on diacetyl and its association with bronchiolitis obliterans in a peer-reviewed scientific journal, examining the NIOSH health hazard evaluations and reports from the California Department of Health regarding diacetyl and fixed obstructive pulmonary disease.

Dana M. Hollins, M.P.H. is a Health Scientist at the San Francisco branch of ChemRisk, LLC. Her primary training and areas of expertise include environmental and occupational epidemiology, exposure assessment, human health risk assessment and industrial hygiene. She has been involved in researching, measuring exposure, reconstructing dose and exposure, and assessing risk to consumers and workers exposed to a variety of chemicals including asbestos, beryllium, benzene, and phthalates. She also has experience in evaluating occupational hazards to airborne chemicals in the workplace using historical industrial hygiene and exposure simulation data. Her experience also includes investigating exposures and health effects resulting from non-occupational exposure to indoor air pollutants. She completed her master's thesis in the field of environmental and occupational epidemiology and statistics, and her degrees include a M.P.H., Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology and a B.A., Organizational Management from the University of Michigan.

Jennifer Sahmel, MPH, CIH, CSP is a Supervising Health Scientist at the Boulder, Colorado branch of ChemRisk, LLC. She is a certified industrial hygienist and certified safety professional with 13 years of experience in human health risk assessment and workplace health and safety. Sahmel has experience in exposure assessment methodologies, health risk decision making, and safety management systems. Her areas of expertise include comprehensive exposure and risk assessment strategies, Bayesian decision analysis, EPA exposure assessment tools, qualitative and quantitative dermal exposure assessment methods, industrial hygiene monitoring and data analysis, safety and occupational health management methods, and safety leadership. She holds a M.P.H., Industrial Hygiene, University of California, Berkeley and a B.A., International Studies, College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va.
