As employers in California, we all know who's responsible for health and safety when all of the workers at a site work for the same employer. But things get complicated at worksites with multiple employers, like those in construction. When there are multiple subcontractors employing their own workers, it can get a confusing determining who has the ultimate decision-making authority when it comes to workplace safety.

And what happens if one of the subcontractor's workers gets hurt or Cal/OSHA issues citations for non-compliance?

Cal/OSHA clearly delineates between controlling, creating, and correcting employers and gives controlling employers the authority to act when conditions are unsafe. Contractors are required to follow your safety program and inform you of any hazards that could potentially occur as a result of their work onsite. Not only do you need to make sure that each subcontractor has a safety plan in place, but you also need to make sure that every contract employee knows how to safely perform his/her job and has been trained as required. Join us on October 28 for an information-packed webinar with safety expert Pam Ferrante. She will help you navigate the complexities of contractor safety and liability for your company.

You'll learn:

  • Now Cal/OSHA defines "multiple employers" and how to assert your authority to make sure your worksite is safe and in compliance
  • How to establish a contractor safety management program that integrates with your company's overall safety program
  • How to prescreen and assess contractors' safety track records
  • How to spot-check and evaluate a contractor's overall performance and why it is best to pre-qualify them
  • Which safety violations of its subcontractors a general contractor may be on the hook for
  • How to verify that each contract employee is adequately trained and understands onsite safety procedures
  • Why it's important to establish a dialogue with your contractors to stay on top of any potentially dangerous conditions
