Traffic was at a standstill in the eastbound lanes of the Will Rogers Turnpike just outside Miami, Oklahoma, on June 26, 2009; a minor accident had blocked the road. Truck driver Donald Creed, 76, was approaching the stopped traffic in his 18-wheeler, with his cruise control set at 69 miles per hour in the 75 mile-per-hour zone. A 20-year-old apprentice mechanic had been working for a California water truck rental company for only two days, and his supervisor, the lead mechanic, had been working there for only four days. On the apprentice's second day of work, the company owner showed the lead mechanic and the apprentice the proper safety procedure to follow when changing a tire on a big truck.
